Basic Thoughts on Simple Church?
Simple church can have a powerful impact on the community, country and the world for numerous reasons. The foundational reason is because Christ is the center of the movement. Without Christ as the head of the church, there is no reason for the church to exist, but with Christ at the head, communities are enhanced, ministry has power and God is glorified by the unifying effect of believers living out their faith with community.
Today, individuals in our culture crave community. For some, especially among our younger generations, real flesh-and-blood friends have been replaced by text messaging, MySpace, Facebook and other forms of techno-buddies. Community and belonging are desired so strongly that all sorts of communities are popping up in many different forms and fashions. Simple church gives people the chance not only to dream of a safe and caring community but experience the joy of being apart of its reality. Simple churches believe that the world will know Christ by the love that church members have for one another.
Being involved in a simple church puts participants face to face with taking responsibility for their faith. God designed His church to support its members but each member must be responsible to God for their actions. As the group seeks answers to life’s hard questions reality hits that Christianity is not a spectator sport!
At a typical simple church gathering each person participates in the discussion and can enjoy deep fellowship with a small, close-knit circle of believers. Often groups meet multiple times during the week either in part or in whole to enjoy a meal together, provide services for others, to study the Bible, etc. Simple church is a lifestyle that is lived out day and night. Due to this lifestyle, simple church is not intimidating to many that have reservations about “church”. When you meet with at simple church gathering, you can expect to be welcomed into someone's home like you are one of the family.
Simple church gives believers a powerful grasp on ministry. Having ownership and taking responsibility for their own faith enables believers to walk boldly with the Lord. Another freedom that enables ministry is finances. Money goes directly to meet need within the group and also outside of the group. Each simple church handles money differently as the Lord leads. Also, another aspect of simple church is to encourage every believer to go and do, to be active participants of the great commission: "go and make disciples of all nations."
The reach of simple church is far greater than can at first be imagined. This is simply due to the dynamic nature of simple church. Remember for a moment that simple church typically does not take place in a particular building. Groups can meet in homes, parks, community centers, etc. and are not restricted to one place and one time. Additionally, as the groups make contact with the community new-comers are encouraged not only to join an existing group, but to start a new one! Simple churches network together and support one another with outreach, fellowship, and even worship together. This networking of simple churches, along with the absence of walls, can result in a multiplying effect that can spread throughout a city or even an entire region! This very thing is what is happening today in areas of the world more hostile toward the Gospel, reaching millions of people who would otherwise not hear the Gospel at all.
